The cold weather is right around the corner and in some cases already here. I have been busy bagging some windows and in two cases have new windows ordered to replace old worn out ones. Here are some other tips on how to save some money on your heating bill this winter.

Install a thermostat that you can program. Where you can turn the heat down during the day and have it come on when you are at home and then go down while you are asleep. You won't believe how much you can save on your bill from doing this. You can pick one for under $50 from any hardware store and they are really easy to install.

Getting an enery audit and government subsidies are getting easier all the time. Check with your local green up or city hall to see if there are programs in your area. They will come in tell you where you have problems and offer solutions to fix them up. In most cases if you fix your problems then you can get rebates and incentives.

Seal up draughty windows with plastic so that your heat doesn't escape all winter long. You can get kits from hardware stores pretty cheap or use plastic sheets or bags that you might have around the house.

Take a look at the rubber weather stripping around your doors and the rubber blocker at the bottom of the door. If a breeze is getting through then replace them. They are inexpensive to replace and the money you will save on your heating bill will be more than enough to cover it.

Finally, turn the heat down a little and wear an extra shirt, sweat shirt and put a blanket over yourself. You don't have to have it so hot that your house is tropical.
