How Hot is Your Powerbar?
I just caught an interesting news story the other night. An energy expert did a tour of a house and pointed out some of the ways people could save money. One of the killers were the powerbars. He stated that if the plugs in the are hot then they are wasting electrcity.
I tested the powerbar that I have my XBox360, Router and Cable Modem plugged into. Both the Modem and Router were very warm which means as they sit on all day they are draining power. So now before I go to bed and before I leave the house for the day or any length of time I am shutting off the power bar. No sense of wasting money letting it sit all day.
I have a couple of powerbars through the house and actually unplugged a few things I don't use often but were still warm. My wireless headphones for example charge all day and the plug was hot but I only use them when watching movies on the weekend. So they are now unplugged. Have a look around your house and see if you can save some electricity.

Have you ever seen rolling blackout during the winter? Of course not. There's a reason why they happen during the summer and air conditioning is one of the main reasons. If you want to save money on your summer electric bill then you have to look at your current air conditioning situation and look to improve where you can.
There was an ad in our local paper the other for a company that would come over and free of charge they will take your old engery wasting refrigerator away and recycle it. A perfect idea for a blog post on saving money. How much of a difference does an old refrigerator make? An article on CNN today oddly enough gives the straight facts. If you ditch your pre-1993 fridge, you'll save enough on energy costs to buy coffee for nearly 80 days. Refrigerators qualified under the new Energy Star guidelines use less energy than a 75-watt light bulb left on full time. If your current model was built before 1993, it costs at least double to run than new Energy Star-rated models of the same size. That's and impressive savings no matter how you look at it.
