Stop Nickel and Diming Yourself and Save Money

Tag:

I have a friend that was looking to save some extra money each month. I was looking at his lifestyle it was hard to see anything extravagant that he was spending his money on.

One day out of blue for some reason I noticed the coffee cups. They were in his garbage, in his car, on his tables and in his hand when I would see him. It dawned on me that he is probably nickel and diming himself each week. The worst part of it was that he didn't realize he was doing it.

There in lies the tip to start saving some money. First, you have to realize that your little daily or weekly expenses no matter how small add up. Second, pay attention to your daily spending habits and do the math to see how much these little expenses add up to over the course of a week or a month. Finally, see if you can do without these little expenses or make change to cut these down.

Still doesn't add up? Let's take the coffee habit as an example. Let's suppose that you are buying two coffees a day at the store at $2 a piece. That's $28 a week and $112 a month. Imagine what you can do with $112 a month. Okay, so you are not cutting coffee out completely but what about buying coffee in bulk and making your own in the morning and bringing a thermos on the road with you instead of stopping. Savings again.

Find a couple of these small expenditures and try to save on them and you will be on your way to saving money.

How To Cut Your Grocery Bill

Tags: ,

Isn't it depressing after you spend over $100 at a grocery store and you get home and have nothing to eat. We are constantly doing that. I recently came upon an interesting article which suggested ways to cut down on your annual grocery bill. I myself have not tried them yet but am willing to do anything to try and cut down on my food costs.

The article suggested to "Stockpile" when items are on sale. It stated that items going on sale usually do so every 10-12 weeks. Makes sense, if the shelf life on your canned goods etc are going to last then why not pick up three or four cans of the item and store it away. If peanut butter is on sale and you know you are going to go through it, why not pick up a couple jars while it's cheaper.

Free Online Samples Save Money

Tags: ,

Have you ever invested a hefty sum of money on expensive products just to realize they were not worth the investment? It happens to most of us and we could have avoided such pointless waste of money if the products we purchased had samples in the first place. There are many businesses which offer their products to consumers for free in order to build attention around their brand, but most people have no clue that they exist. From software to health products, you can find free samples of pretty much any kind of product you're looking for. The key is to do a little research before you head out to buy expensive products.

One of the reasons why many people don't want to take some time to collect coupons which may lead them to free products is because of the "time" factor. It doesn't make sense to have to wait days for products to arrive while you could make a quick trip to the store and get what you want, this would be the fastest solution but not necessarily the more cost-effective one. By doing a little bit of research you can save a lot of money in products you use on a daily basis.

Weather Proofing Doors and Windows Adds Up

Tag:

We heat our house with electric forced air heat. Expensive? It can be but we combat that cost by ensuring that our doors and windows are weather proofed properly for the winter. By doing so we keep the heat in and the cold out.

This winter season it got cold early and I knew that our heating costs would be through the roof if I didn't do a quick check on our windows and doors to ensure they were air tight. To my surprise there was quite a bit of air coming through my windows where the latches meet. I also found that the rubber pieces under two of my outer door were worn allowing quite a bit of cold air through.

I solved the problem with a quick trip the my local hardware store and for about $20 I was able to but enough stripping to do all of the windows in the house and the ensure the doors were properly sealed.

It would hurt to check around all of your doors and windows. If you can feel a significant breeze coming in you are just throwing money out the window in heating costs.

Up Your Deductible and Save Money

Tag:

If you know somebody that doesn't like to spend money then chances are if you listen to them long enough then you will pick up tips on how to save money. I picked up a good one quite recently regarding saving money through my house insurance.

Think about your deductible. When I first started paying house insurance my deductible was $250. What I didn't realize was that the price you pay on your total annual house insurance cost is based on your deductible. The less your deductible is, the more your house insurance is.

Of course, this all depends on your current financial situation but if you have a piper burst that is going to cost you $350 to fix are you going to put it through insurance and risk having your rates go up or are you going to get if fixed and forget about it? If you have a break-in and they steal your $800 tv are you just going to replace it or put it through insurance? We both know that unless something major happens to your house you are not putting anything through insurance.

Then why not save some money each month or each year and bump your deductible up to an amount where you say to yourself and feel comfortable with just paying it off. Right now, I have had mine bumped to $1,000 for the past three years. Unless something that costs over $1,000 dollars happens I am not putting through insurance. It's a number I feel comfortable with and I benefit from the lower monthly or annual payment.

Think about what you can afford in the case of a minor happening and talk to your insurance company about increasing your deductible.

Energy Saving Tips

One of your largest expenditure each month is going to be the cost of heating your house. Why not take a couple of simple steps to reduce that cost each month. Think about the money you can save each month by cutting down your heating bill.

  • To save money on heating costs, reduce the temperature of your home a few degrees at night and when you're away.
  • Keep blinds, shades and drapes closed during the hottest part of the day in the summer. (And open south-facing blinds on sunny winter days!)
  • Use area rugs on cold floors – if your feet are cold, your body will feel cold.
  • If you feel cool, put on a sweater rather than simply turning up the thermostat.
  • Clean or replace the air filter on your furnace every month to improve efficiency.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights in the house (they produce a lot of heat which works against the AC.)
  • Conservation can be as easy as planting a tree. Plant leafy (deciduous) trees on the sunny side of your house. During the summer they provide shade, and in the winter they will shed their leaves to let the warming sunshine through. Pine or fir trees on the north side provide an energy-saving windbreak.
  • Those are some basic tips to cut down on your heating and cooling bill and save you money each month. Stay tuned for more energy saving tips.

The price of gas in no joke, the ever increasing price of gas is really becoming alarming. So much so that it is affecting those that struggle to make ends meet to those that depend on reasonable prices to make a daily living. There are a number of ways or things that you can do to cut down on your daily or monthly expense on gas.

Obviously there is carpooling. By sharing driving duties with others that you work with or those that work in the vicinity you can cut down on your expenses. Some employers will even offer incentives to car pool. It never hurts to ask.

Keep your eyes on your tires. This really has a big effect on your gas mileage. Having under inflated tires or even poorly aligned tires will waste extra fuel by forcing you’re engine to work harder.
